#364: The latest news from the world of design conferences

Why didn't anyone think of this new feature sooner? Apple has announced Edge Light, a new feature that creates the effect of light coming from multiple sides by displaying a white ring on your screen. This creates a similar effect to the ring lights often used by influencers for video calls. It is particularly useful for those who frequently find themselves in dimly lit spaces. It provides good lighting from all sides, ensuring you are clearly visible even in low-light conditions. The Mac's Neural Engine automatically recognises your face to ensure the light is optimally positioned. You can also easily adjust the colour of the light in the same menu where you adjust the microphone and camera settings. This feature is available on Macs with an Apple Silicon chip. It works with both the built-in camera and external webcams. The Edge Light feature will be available with macOS Tahoe 26.2. It is expected to be released this month.

Working on a Windows machine? Scott Hanselman, Microsoft's VP of Developer Community, developed Edge Light for Windows, which includes automatic face recognition. You can find it on his GitHub page or download it directly from his release page. I’m looking forward using this feature.
