Neon Moiré Edge Tags: A new way to find friction

Neon Moiré has long been the go-to calendar for the most interesting events in the design world, including typography deep dives, motion showcases, creative coding jams and much more. Starting as a curated antidote to the noise of 'design conferences', it has grown into a lifeline for those planning their 2026 travel around SmashingConf, PUSH or Us By Night.

We're now experimenting with Edge Tags — five badges (critical, experimental, participatory, anti-trend and interdisciplinary) that highlight events that will actually challenge you.

Why tags matter now
Design directories list what and where. Edge Tags answer the question of why this one is worth attending: ethics debates that affect your client work (critical), live jams that combat keynote fatigue (experimental), workshops where you create something imperfect (participatory), anti-hype sanity (anti-trend) and fields you are not already familiar with (interdisciplinary).

In a world of infinite online talks, these tags indicate when travelling to Berlin or Montreal could genuinely transform your practice, rather than just filling your camera roll.

Why it's an experiment
I was thinking about how to rewrite promotional copy for Neon Moiré, which led me to the idea that, if we're going to festivals, they should challenge our assumptions. After rating April events (CHI 2026 got all five, while Quirk's got none), I realised that curators select interesting events, but users require cues to experience productive discomfort.

No other calendar offers this feature. I’m currently beta testing on 20 events, tracking clicks and making refinements based on what works well. Organisers can suggest tags, and you can vote to override them…

Edge Tag sample for upcoming April events:
SmashingConf Amsterdam: participatory, anti-trend, interdisciplinary
The Art Department Eindhoven: participatory, experimental, interdisciplinary
beyond tellerrand: anti-trend, experimental, interdisciplinary

Expect tags on neonmoire.com event cards and beehiiv summaries by next week. Filter by friction. Fly deliberately.

What tags would you add? Reply and help shape it.

Happy Neon Monday,
Thomas
