2023 Recap — Design Events Details
Finally the my 2023 recap is here. After two weeks of Covid, I’m getting slowly back on track.
Looking back at 2023 there where 202 design event listed on neonmoire.com or mentioned in this newsletter.
Some design event details, I would like to share with you.
Design Event Details
I was surprised by the number of new events launched in 2023.
A bit of a trend reversal.
Design Events did not start in 2000, but it is a good starting point for this graph and also the year OFFF Barcelona was founded.
October is clearly a popular month.
There is a design conference somewhere in the world almost every day.
There are many opportunities outside of Europe.
Brave and impressive.
Speaker Leaderboard
In June I saw a pattern. So, for the first time, I created a speaker ranking to see if what I thought I was seeing was correct...
This is an absolute trend breaker. As far as the data is concerned, maybe for the first time ever...
Australian letter artist Gemma O'Brien, has spoken at 8 events in 5 countries on 3 continents.

After a decade working in graphic design, lettering and illustration, Gemma O'Brien was intrigued by the idea that ultra running might hold the secrets to a long life as an artist. Watch her talk recorded at beyond tellerrand Dusseldorf as she shares the early stories of her career, the hands-on processes behind her largest wall installations and explains what she thinks it means to be an ultra artist!
Best talk
The best talk I've seen this year was by Halli (Haraldur Thorleifsson) at Kinference. Halli is the founder of Ueno, Önnu Jónu Son, Anna Jóna, Ramp up Iceland. Unfortunately, the recorded talk is not available in all countries, so I have added Halli's talk at Config, which covers more or less the same topics. The talk is an emotional rollercoaster.
Best New Event Branding
Personal Highlight
Speaking and hosting a session at the Eastern European Design Festival in Warsaw. In September I travelled to Warsaw to attend and speak at the new festival dedicated to visual design in Central, Eastern and Southern Europe, which aims to showcase and popularise the visual culture of this region. In addition, the Festival of Eastern European Design (FEED) focuses on connecting and integrating design events taking place in Eastern European countries. The biggest takeaway for me was to be as cool as a presenter at a boiler room session. 🙂 Read my full review on neonmoire.com
